Some New Earphones - Shure E3c

Shure e3c Earphones
I really dig my iPod. I take it just about everywhere. I had previously bought a set of Sony in-ear model earphones, which had some pretty decent sound and did a good job of muting the droning of the jet engines while in flight. Unfortunately, these got destroyed on my last trip due to a hasty crumpling into the front of my laptop bag when I was running late... Bummer. So, after suffering for a couple of days with no tunes, I broke down and went in search of some new ones.

Well, I fell for the marketing and hype around the Shure E3c ear phones. These run about $180 retail, cheaper in some places online. I've read some of the glowing reviews online, but chalked them up (for the most part) to having to justify spending a ridiculous amount of money on earphones that are primarily used to listen to crappy 128K mp3 files... But still, I jumped in with both feet, and here I am with a pair.

They totally rock. Maybe not $180 rocking, but still far, far superior to the previous set. Some of the reviews lamented the lack of bass response from these, but they sound absolutely terrific to me. In addition, the sound blocking feature works extremely well. It's like wearing earplugs when you have these things in. I notice that the volume levels I'm using are much lower than what I've been used to. You definitely don't want to wear these while driving. You'll never hear Officer Friendly trying to pull you over.

They fit completely inside your ear, and the wire comes out the top and wraps over the back of your ear. This takes some getting used to, but works out OK nonetheless. It comes with lots of little ear adapters that you can try to find the one that fits you best, as well as a nice little zippered spool for making sure they stay nice (and not crammed in a little wad in the front of your bag.)

Shure has another, even more costlier ($500) pair of earphones, the E5c's - I was warned that I shouldn't try these if I didn't want to spend the money. Apparently the difference is huge, and you won't want to go back. However, the E3c's sound great, much better than anything else I have (or had), so I'm going to remain happily ignorant of the more expensive version.
